Christmas only days away. Tuesday sometime between five and six and the Newport Mall. A swarm of parents with their kids in tow. I wonder why they are waiting so late, but is it late? What week of Advent is the one best for the visit to Santa’s lap. It’s a scene that’s been parodied so often, hard not to see it this as anything but a cliché, especially where the whole Mall situation is a for-profit photo-op. Memories of our own visit to Santa, when we believed, are so cloudy. I wonder if we are remembering more of our first visit, or of our last. Still, it’s nice to think, that for a moment or two, a touch of magic is felt by the kids and the parents know they are doing something to make their child happy. I love the flat screen Television above Santa’s throne flickering with Hanukkah trivia and the diversity of races of the parents waiting their turn.
