Group Exhibition at City Hall. Okay, what it lacks in enticing creativity it makes up for in utilitarian description. Indeed, it was that, a group exhibition at City Hall. No sort of literature on the art or artists was available, no apparent theme or sequence presented.
Okay, so the ongoing conflicts twixt art and authority seem much on our minds. But artists need exposure, they need walls where the people are. This is a great gesture, you won’t find it in many other cities.
Call Animal Control, one of the bunnies is missing.
I love this building too, I love the WPA feel to it. Democracy occurs incrementally. Yes, we have the grandeur of D.C., Supreme Court ruling on Brown v Board of Education or Congress passing Civil Rights, nation changing events. What about the day to day zoning laws, the things we need to do to get on with our lives that require interaction with the local authorities. This is the people’s house too; there’s an openness and an egalitarian atmosphere.
Hanging art in these not so hallowed but very necessary halls enhances the atmosphere. It’s like take your artist to government work day. It’s not the best place to hang art, the light is deplorable for aesthetics. The individual works of art may suffer slightly, but the democratic ideal is greatly improved. The art seems to be placed within a remarkable collective context just by being gathered here. We the people, and here’s a peak of that people’s imagination.
And let’s face, it is surreal and odd to see art in this place. The juxtaposition alone is fun and entertaining. The Artists Studio tour is for everyone, just like this City Hall. In all honesty, I love the City Hall building and take any opportunity to go inside. A diversity of art there adds to that pleasure. Keep Hope Alive!
