Sidewalk Closed. Stores Opened

Construction Ahead. Stores Open. (Is that a warning or an order?) Jersey City, land of contradictions. Parts of the sidewalk on the south side of Newark Avenue are being replaced. The sidewalks in front of the stores are closed off by our ubiquitous yellow caution tape, but the stores are opened. How do you get to the stores without using the sidewalk? Ignore the caution tape. By the afternoon the tape was removed as the heavy equipment was used. Wasn’t this more destruction than construction? We endure the constant confusion in this town by ignoring paradoxes. They open up the veneer of the present to the past beneath us just to cover it up again with a new veneer. I keep hoping they’ll find such mythical Jersey City Artifacts as winos in amber, wind-powered hot dog carts and jitney buses with steam engines.
