Repurposing Repurpose

One art form promotes another.

A few times a year, the J. City Theater Company re-purposes the basement of Saint Michaels Church on 9th street for live theater. I watched a rehearsal last year, blogged about here.

The next show is State of the Union.

Theater took the opportunity to promote Theater by participating in the Studio Tour. They repurposed their church basement theater into a church basement gallery by rearranging the drapes, dividers and seating so instead of a theater, they had art gallery. But their repurposing went one more step, placing the seating in the middle of one space, giving it a museum feel. All galleries are repurposed buildings, that’s part of the fun. Lets face it, the only buildings whose purpose is art gallery are museums. But outside of musuems, especially the repurposed J.C. galleries on the tour, the spaces are often confined. You are forced to confront the artist and chit chat. Here the chit chat was more optional, you could relax some, take in the art, the atmosphere, the vibe of the art, the vibe of the space.
Curated by Hernando Rico Sanchez & Nelson Alverez, the show featured the work of Bonnie Gloris, Peg McCreary and Lucio Fernandez.

Mostly I liked the relaxed vibe. I particularly like some of the abstracts and the folk-art. The pictures I took are not very representative of the exhibit. I apologize for these images being below even my usual low standards.
